This Plato site accompanies a course in Ancient Philosophy taught by Robert Cavalier at Carnegie Mellon University.
The material presented here began as scholarly material developed in preparation for my book, Plato for Beginners (Writers and Readers, 1990). Influenced in part by the Duquesne University Plato lectures of John Sallis in the 1970s and an NEH Summer Seminar at Stanford in 1983, "Understanding Plato" serves as adjunct to the Plato book as well as a general exposition of Plato's main ideas.
